Unclaimed State Funds

States hold certain abandoned or unclaimed property until a rightful owner, heir, or business claims it. Many people never learn that something is being held in their name.

The basics

What Is Unclaimed Property?

When a company, bank, insurer, or other holder cannot locate the owner of money or property after a period of inactivity, many states require that the property be turned over to a state unclaimed-property program. The state then holds it until a rightful owner, heir, or business comes forward.

Why people don't know funds exist

  • Mail was sent to an address the person no longer used.
  • An account was opened years ago and then forgotten.
  • A business closed, merged, or changed names.
  • The original owner died and family members were never notified.
  • A name was misspelled or recorded differently in the holder's records.

Examples of unclaimed property

  • Dormant bank accounts
  • Uncashed checks
  • Insurance proceeds
  • Deposits
  • Refunds
  • Securities
  • Dividends
  • Escrow balances
  • Royalties
  • Business payments
  • Trust distributions
  • Safe-deposit property
  • Other qualifying abandoned property

You May Be Able to Claim State-Held Property Yourself

Official state unclaimed-property programs generally allow people to search for and claim their own property directly, without paying A4K or any other company. If you prefer to handle a claim yourself, you are entitled to do so.

A4K's services are optional. They are intended for clients who want professional assistance researching, documenting, managing, and following through with the recovery process — particularly where heirs, estates, businesses, older records, or multiple jurisdictions are involved.

Verification

How Ownership Is Usually Verified

  • Identity documentation for the claimant.
  • Proof connecting the claimant to the address, account, or entity on record.
  • Estate or heirship documentation where the original owner has died.
  • Entity documentation where a business or successor entity is the claimant.
  • Additional items required by the specific state program.
